Joho Orders Closure of All Mombasa Nightclubs to Combat Spread of Coronavirus
Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has ordered the closure of all nightclubs as part of the measures to combat the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19) in the port city.
Joho, who addressed the press on Saturday, said the entertainment joints will remain shut for the next 30 days to minimize the possible spread of the dreaded disease.
Bars and restaurants, which are not affected by the ban, will only operate up to 11 pm. The Mombasa County government also suspended visits to prisons and all inter-school functions for a period of 30 days.
Other measures taken by the county government include door-to-door sensitization on hygiene, installation of hand-washing facilities for ferry users, a directive to all hotels to provide customers with sanitizers, and conducting aggressive hand-washing campaigns in slum areas.
This comes a day after the government confirmed Kenya’s first Covid-19 case. The patient, a 27-year-old Kenyan student, arrived in the country from the US on March 5th.
Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the patient is receiving medication at Kenyatta National Hospital and is in stable condition.
