'It Kills Covid-19,' Nairobi Governor Sonko Says After Donating Expensive Alcohol to Kenyans

John Wanjohi Apr 15, 2020

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has explained why alcohol is part of the food donation he is giving to vulnerable Kenyans in the city in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Sonko and his team have been including a few bottles of Hennessy, an expensive alcohol brand brewed in Cognac, France, in the food hamper distributed to some residents of Nairobi.

He claims that alcohol has been proven to kill the coronavirus disease, citing research by the World Health Organization (WHO).

"We have been giving some small bottles of Hennessy in the food pack that we have been distributing. I think research from the World Health Organization (WHO) has shown that alcohol plays a strong part in killing the coronavirus," Sonko said.

But Sonko’s claims are unfounded because WHO has warned people that consuming alcohol does not shield one from contracting Covid-19. In fact, the agency cautioned that excessive consumption of alcohol could lead to other medical conditions that would complicate things if a person is infected with Covid-19.

WHO has only recommended the use of sanitizers with at least 60 percent alcohol to wash hands.
