68-Year-Old Nigerian Woman Gives Birth to Twins
A 68-year-old Nigerian woman has given birth to twins, becoming one of the world’s oldest new mums.
The sexagenarian successfully delivered the two babies at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), the chairman of the hospital’s Medical Advisory Council Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo announced in a statement on Sunday, April 19th.
Adeyemo indicated that the woman gave birth on April 14th through an elective cesarean section at 37 weeks’ gestation and both the babies and mother are doing well. He added that the mother got pregnant for the first time through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
“LUTH has successfully delivered a sixty-eight (68) year old prim-gravida (pregnant for the first time) with twin (a male and a female) gestation (pregnancy) following an IVF conception. She was delivered through an elective cesarean section at 37 weeks gestation on Tuesday, April 14, 2020,” the statement read.
“The IVF and embryo transfer were done at an outside facility. She was thereafter referred to LUTH at early gestation and managed till term. This is the first in LUTH, Nigerian and Africa! Mother and babies are well.”
