Detectives from Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have arrested Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Finance Manager Patrick Nyoike over graft allegations.

Nyoike was arrested in Mombasa on Sunday, May 10th, following an order issued by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji.

DPP’s office said an investigation done by EACC unearthed a scandal at KPA where Nyoike allegedly used his office to make irregular payments amounting to Sh214 million to a company named Nyali Capital Limited.

“Indeed, Patrick Wambugu Nyoike facilitated Nyali Capital Limited’s microfinance business to finance the KPA suppliers, Local Purchase Order (LPOs) and Local Service Orders (LSOs) and thereafter used the KPA system to have the principal and the interest from the said suppliers remitted to Nyali Capital Limited’s account by the KPA,” the Office of DPP said in a statement.

Nyoike’s wife Jacinta Wanjiku Wambugu, who serves as Nyali Capital Limited’s General Manager was also apprehended. Others are directors of Nyali Capital Limited Peter Ndichu Kinyanjui and Alfred Hinga, a brother to Nyoike.

“This clearly demonstrates a conflict of interest on the part of Patrick Wambugu Nyoike,” DPP added.

Also arrested is KPA clerk Isaac Obunga, who is accused of irregularly listing Nyali Capital Limited as a vendor in KPA’s vendor portal.

The suspects will be charged with abuse of office, conspiracy to commit an offense of corruption, and dealing with suspect property, among others.
