Jubilee Signs Coalition Agreement with Kanu Ahead of 2022 Elections
Jubilee Party has formalized its coalition agreement with Kenya African National Union (Kanu) ahead of the 2022 election.
Although Kanu agreed to back President Kenyatta’s re-election in the 2017 presidential contest, the two parties did not file a formal pre-election agreement as demanded by the law.
As a result, the two political outfits decided to sign a post-election deal last week, Daily Nation reports. Jubilee secretary-general Raphael Tuju confirmed the signing of the deal, which was deposited with the Registrar of Political Parties on Friday, May 8th.
“It was supposed to be deposited as soon as the pre-election deal was done, but some people just did not do their jobs,” said Tuju.
He added: “So to avoid any challenge and any ambiguity, the two parties have chosen the path of a post-election agreement to formalize the relationship they already have.”
Kanu has 10 MPs in the National Assembly and three senators, who include Party Leader Gideon Moi (Baringo Senator), Senator Samuel Poghisio (West Pokot), and Senator Abshiro Soka Halake (nominated).
Kanu becomes the first party to formalize its agreement with the governing party. The signing of the agreement is seen as a plot by President Kenyatta to consolidate his support in parliament amid a growing rift between him and Deputy President William Ruto.
Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu said: "This is to certify that Jubilee Party and Kanu, fully registered political parties under the Political Parties Act, 2011, deposited a coalition agreement. Form PP 19 was filed on May 4, 2020, by the chairmen and secretary generals of the two parties.”
The agreement was signed by Tuju, Jubilee Chairman Nelson Dzuya, Senator Moi, and Kanu secretary-general Nick Salat.
