Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru Impeached

John Wanjohi Jun 09, 2020

Members of the Kirinyaga County Assembly (MCAs) have voted to impeach Governor Anne Waiguru.

The impeachment motion against Waiguru sailed through after it garnered the support of 23 out of 33 MCAs during a session marred with chaos on Tuesday.

The motion was filed by Mutira Ward MCA David Kinyua Wangui who cited gross misconduct and abuse of office as the grounds for Waiguru’s removal.

County Assembly Speaker Anthony Gathumbi announced Waiguru had been impeached after the motion was voted by the required majority. Four other Ward Representatives abstained while six were absent.

Chaos broke out during the proceedings after MCA Anthony Munene (Karumandi) and Nominated MCA Lucy Njeri were ejected. The two are allies of Governor Waiguru.

In a statement earlier, Governor Waiguru termed the impeachment motion against her as an ill-informed and ill-timed.

“As I have stated before, the issues raised in the motion are baseless and a waste of valuable time that would be better spent handling the serious issues impacting the county including the corona crisis,” said Waiguru.

She further indicated that there is a High Court order barring proceedings at the Kirinyaga County Assembly with regards to the ouster motion.

“For some inexplicable reason the members pushing this motion believe or have been led to believe that they are above the law, They believe they are not bound by court orders. Their allegiance seems to be a master pulling and pushing the levers from outside the county assembly and not to the rule of law,” she added.

Waiguru threatened to return to court to seek contempt of court orders against Kirinyaga County Assembly Speaker and MCAs involved in her ouster.
