Six Kenyan MPs Hospitalized After Contracting Covid-19, One in ICU

Six Kenyan MPs are presently admitted to the hospital after they contracted Covid-19, according to reports.

The Standard on Monday reported that one of the six MPs is fighting for his life in the Intensive Care Unit at a Nairobi hospital.

Several MPs who interacted closely with their infected colleagues are said to have rushed to the hospital for testing to confirm their statuses.

Two of the six MPs—one from the Coast and the other from the Western region—are suspected to have contracted the infection after coming into contact with their colleague who is admitted to the ICU.

“There is a major scare. Many of those who interacted with him have had to go for tests, and this figure might even be high by Monday when the results of the majority who voluntarily did the tests are released. I know at least six MPs have so far turned positive and are in hospitals, one is in ICU,” an MP who sought anonymity was quoted by The Standard.

When contacted for comment on the matter, National Assembly Clerk Michael Sialai said he is not privy to information on MPs’ Covid-19 statuses, saying their health is a private matter.

“If true, it would be a matter of great concern, but as of now, there is no report made to us of any case,” Sialai said.

Last week, State House was placed under lockdown after four workers tested positive for the disease.

State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena in a communique confirmed President Kenyatta, First Lady Margret Kenyatta, and all members of the first family were safe and free from Covid-19.
