Nacada Launches Crackdown on Kenyans Drinking Alcohol at Home

The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) has launched a crackdown on Kenyans drinking alcohol at home.

The agency swung into action after it emerged that some parents are consuming liquor and drugs at home in the presence of their kids following the closure of bars and other entertainment joints due to the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Nacada chair Mabel Imbuga called on members of the public to report such incidents to the authority through their toll-free number 1192 or police for action.

“Drinking at home also undermines the protective home environment for the pupils and students who are staying at home because of the containment measures imposed by the government to check the spread of Covid-19,” said Imbuga in a statement on Saturday.

“We advise parents to take advantage of the situation to create an alcohol-free home environment as well as build closer relationships with their children.” 

At the same time, Imbuga faulted the proposed regulations by the Health Ministry seeking to ban the sale of alcohol to sit-in customers at restaurants, bars, and entertainment joints, arguing that they will lead to an increase in home drinking.

The Health Ministry says the proposed regulations are aimed at stemming the spread of Covid-19.
