DPP Orders Arrest of Migori Governor Okoth Obado and His 4 Children over Sh73 Million Scam

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has ordered the arrest of Migori Governor Okoth Obado and members of his family over graft allegations.

Obado will be arrested and charged alongside his two sons and two daughters over alleged involvement in the embezzlement of Sh73.5 million from the Migori County government coffers. 

Haji in a statement on Tuesday said investigations into the alleged misappropriation of funds belonging to Migori County established that Obado and his children have a case to answer.

Investigators found out that Obado indirectly received Sh73,474,376 through his sons and daughter, who received multiple payments from different companies doing business with the Migori County government between the 2013-2014 and 2016-2017 financial years.

The four Obado’s children are Dan Achola Okoth, Jerry Zachary Okoth, Susan Scarlet Okoth, and Evelyn Adhiambo Okoth. Obado’s family allegedly used the looted funds to acquire a prime property at Loresho Ridge in Nairobi, buy luxury cars, and to pay school fees in foreign institutions in the UK, Scotland, and Australia.

“The money was used to pay their school fees, upkeep, maintenance and medical bills in Australia, Scotland and the United Kingdom. Some of the said-monies were also traced to have bought two motor vehicles of make Toyota Land Cruiser V8,” said Haji.

The companies involved in the scam include Misoft Company Limited, Tarchdog Printers, Deltrack ICT Services, Seletrack Consultants, and Mactebac Contractors.

Others are Joyush Business, Swyfcon Engineering, Atinus Services, Kajulu Business, Victorious Investment, Dolphus Softwares, Dankey Press, and Pesulus Services.

“Investigations further revealed that the directors or proprietors of the companies, were proxies of the governor, including three of whom were brothers namely: Jared Peter Kwaga, Patroba Ochanda, and Joram Opala; and their mother Penina Auma Otago, and the spouse to Jared Peter Kwaga, Christine Akinyi and his sister-in-law Carolyne Onyango,” added Haji.
