John Wanjohi Aug 27, 2020

The US government has donated Covid-19 and ICT equipment worth Sh63 million to various departments within Kenya’s Interior Ministry.

The donations funded by the US Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) were delivered to the National Police Service, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), and the Kenya Prison Services on Tuesday.

“The Covid-19 crisis reminds all of us of the importance of protecting both public health while also providing a safe and secure environment for all Kenyans,” US Ambassador to Kenya Kyle McCarter said.

He added: “A healthy police force is essential to achieving this objective. It is critically important that Kenyans follow public health guidelines, and it is equally important that police are able to enforce these regulations ensuring safety and respect for all.”

The personal protective equipment (PPE) donated by the US will be distributed to maximum and remand prisons across the country to help in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

IPOA received a forensic and telecommunications equipment from the US embassy in Nairobi to be used for a call center where members of the public can report any police misconduct via a toll-free number.
