Kenyan Headteacher Hangs Himself in School’s Staffroom

John Wanjohi Aug 29, 2020

The headteacher of Baraka Academy in Nyeri has committed suicide at the school under unclear circumstances.

The body of Joseph Mwangi, 53, was found dangling from the school staffroom’s roof with a sisal rope tied around his neck.

The body was found on Friday after a neighbor informed the school’s proprietor, Teresia Wanjugu of a foul smell emanating from the compound.

Wanjugu immediately rushed to the school where she found the door to the staffroom open and upon entering, she saw Mwangi’s body hanging from the roof.

Police officers were called to the scene to confirm the incident with initial investigations pointing at suicide.

There were visible injuries on the neck and the left side of the face, which may have been caused by an animal, possibly a rat, according to the police.

Mwangi was seen last by his landlord on Wednesday morning and is said to have separated with his wife recently.

The remains were taken to Karatina Sub-County Referral Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem. Investigations into the incident are currently ongoing.
