Murathe Asks EACC to Summon Deputy President Ruto for Questioning over Covid-19 Funds Scandal
Jubilee vice-chairman David Murathe has asked the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to summon Deputy President William Ruto for questioning over the Covid-19 funds' scandal.
Murathe was on Friday grilled by EACC detectives for four hours in connection with the scandal at Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa).
Murathe was summoned for questioning after reports that he was a bank signatory of Kilig Limited, a company that was awarded a Sh4 billion contract for the supply of Covid-19 equipment to Kemsa.
Murathe admitted Kilig director Wilbroad Gachoka is his childhood friend and business partner but denied links to the Covid-19 scandal.
Addressing reporters after the grilling session, Murathe once again dragged DP Ruto’s name into the ongoing investigations into the matter.
He insisted that Kilig did not do business with Kemsa due to financial constraints and that Kilig managers sold their shares to DP Ruto’s associates.
“I know Willbroad who is a partner at Kilig and a Mr. Zhu, and I know at some point they were not able to secure financing for the provision of the kits that they had committed. They had a commitment letter from Kemsa, they transferred their shareholding to persons who are known associates of DP Ruto. So I came here to present that evidence today,” Murathe told journalists.
“I know Kilig never delivered anything to Kemsa. I know Kilig was never paid a penny by Kemsa. I know that the order was canceled before the date and the reason was budgetary constraints. I know all these because I asked Willbroad and he told me. My association with him is not in any business.”
Murathe wants DP Ruto to appear before EACC detectives to shed more light on the scandal. Ruto has denied involvement of any kind in the loss of billions at the State agency.
“The corruption “consultants”, brokers and conmen, some bankrupt in 2013, are now billionaires after looting while scapegoating WsR,” Ruto said in a tweet earlier this week.
