John Wanjohi Sep 08, 2020

Wanjugu Kimathi, the last-born daughter of the late Kenyan freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi was on Monday arrested and detained in Laikipia County.

Wanjugu spent the night at Rumuruti police station following her arrest at Thome area, where she had gone to inspect a parcel of land The Dedan Kimathi Foundation is planning to buy for Mau Mau veterans.

Wanjugu’s daughter, Mukami Kimathi said police did not give reasons for her mother’s arrest.

"We just saw a contingent of police officers who demanded that she gets into their vehicle. Up to now, she is still being locked up at the station," she told Standard Digital.

Wanjugu, who is the founder of the foundation, confirmed her arrest through her Facebook page on Monday night.

"True to their word, I have been arrested. Now locked up at Rumuruti police station. Tell my mother that if by tomorrow I will not be alive, I have been killed at Rumuruti," she wrote.

The foundation has been pushing for the resettlement of Mau Mau veterans who have lived as squatters for over 60 years. It plans to purchase a 12,000-acre piece of land in Thome for their resettlement.

Wanjugu has in the past accused a group of politicians of opposing her initiative. Rumuruti sub-county police commander Kotobu Molu could not be reached for comment on Wanjugu’s arrest.
