Wycliff Cox: Campaign Launched to Demand Justice for Kenyan Man Assaulted by Police in Essex, UK

A campaign has been launched to demand justice for a young Kenyan man who was allegedly assaulted by police in the UK.

This comes after a four-minute video showing officers from the Essex Police Department clobbering the man identified as Wycliff Cox in the presence of his mother and family was shared online, sparking outrage.

Cox, who is said to be suffering from a mental problem, was brutalized during his arrest after he allegedly flouted bail terms.

Reports indicate Cox attempted to escape after police arrived at his mother’s home to arrest him and in the process of fleeing, he kicked one of the officers, hence attracting their wrath. 

In the video, a woman believed to be his mother is heard shouting and pleading with the officers to spare his son, who is pinned to the ground.

“Don’t kill my son…don’t…” she yells.

Following the incident, Mia Kearns, a UK national who runs 38 Degrees has started a campaign to seek justice for Cox.

“We want to bring the justice Wycliff and his family deserves after he was brutally assaulted by police and pinned down from head to toe as they saw him as a threat just because of his mental health and the fact he did try to run away despite the fact he was just scared and was possibly unaware of what was going on or what to do he did breach his bail but this still does not give an excuse for someone to be treated the way he did!” Kearns stated.

“He should’ve been handled with more care and not such violence as this. We want to make it possible for Wycliff to get the mental support he needs and let his family contact him and to keep them updated on his mental state along with having the police officers at the scene punished for their actions.”
