Uhuru, Margaret Kenyatta Become the First Kenyans to Receive Huduma Namba Cards

John Wanjohi Oct 20, 2020

President Kenyatta and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta have become the first Kenyans to receive their Huduma Namba cards.

The two were issued with the electronic cards during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations at Gusii Stadium on Tuesday alongside 10 other Kenyans.

Speaking while presenting the cards to Uhuru, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said the mass issuance of the cards to Kenyans will be rolled out once MPs complete the process of appointment of the Data Commissioner.

“On behalf of my colleagues in the inter-ministerial committee on this historic day, I would like to report that the process is now complete and we have developed the Huduma Namba.”

“Your Excellency, today you and the First Lady will be the first recipients of the sample Huduma Namba card which we hope will be rolled out as soon as the National Assembly completes the process of the appointment of the Data Commissioner as directed by the High Court,” Matiang’i said.

The 10 Kenyans who were given the cards include Laban Ouru Siro, Evans Amenya Bosire, Aloyce Mosoti Okero, Sylvester Achuka Mose, Boniface Moseti Oyaro, Evans Gwaro Nchoga, Kevin Bwire Muvambi, Lawrence Nyaluga Omambia, Evans Michael Mose, and Henry Lerioka Nyabuto Onderi.

Huduma Namba, also referred to as the National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS), was introduced in April 2019. It is described as the single source of personal identification for Kenyans and persons resident in Kenya.

Under the program, Kenyans, foreigners, and refugees in Kenya will be assigned a unique and permanent personal identification number that they will use to identify themselves and seek government services with.
