There was drama in Mathioya, Murang’a County on Friday after a man attempted to attack Deputy President William Ruto.

DP Ruto was leaving Rurii Stadium after gracing a youth and women empowerment function when the unidentified man approached and tried to punch him.

But Ruto’s security detail acted swiftly and roughed up the man before pinning him on the ground, according to The Standard.

DP Ruto was seen taking a step backward as the man confronted him angrily and smiled with a gesture after his security neutralized him.

He was then escorted to the car and his convoy left for Othaya, Nyeri where he was set to attend a similar event.

Contacted for comment on the incident, Ruto’s communications secretary David Mugonyi denied claims that the man attempted to attack the Deputy President.

“Deputy President had earlier on been presented with chicken by an elderly woman and the man was following suit with a gift of tea leaves but was stopped by the bodyguards who did not know what he was up to and was later released,” Mugonyi told The Standard.
