Deputy President William Ruto has suspended his empowerment meetings that were set to take place this weekend in the Ukambani region.

Ruto in a statement on Tuesday announced the scaling down of his nationwide visits and public gatherings citing the rising cases of Covid-19 in the country.

“The upsurge in Covid19 cases strongly indicates that a second wave may be in the offing…The empowerment meetings for this weekend in Machakos, Kitui and Makueni are postponed,” he stated.

Ruto, who is seeking to succeed President Kenyatta, has been holding a series of public rallies across the country in what is seen as a bid to solidify support ahead of the 2022 election.

He has also been hosting huge delegations from various communities at his Karen and Sugoi residences in the past few months.

Kenya is currently experiencing a second wave of Covid-19 with President Kenyatta hinting at imposing a fresh lockdown to combat the spread of the disease.

On Tuesday, the number of Covid-19 cases increased to 57,093 after 492 more people tested positive for the virus.

Recoveries increased by 404 to 37,846 while the death toll hit 1,039 after 12 people succumbed to the disease.
