Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Faces Impeachment as Fresh Motion Filed
A motion of impeachment against Governor Mike Sonko has been tabled at the Nairobi County Assembly.
The notice for the motion was filed on Thursday by Kileleshwa Ward MCA Michael Ogada, who doubles up as the minority leader in the assembly.
Reports indicate that 86 out of 122 Nairobi MCAs have appended their signatures to the motion that cites abuse of office and graft as some of the grounds for Sonko’s removal.
MCA Ogada argues that Sonko is currently facing corruption charges and is, therefore, unfit to hold public office.
Some MCAs are also unhappy with Sonko over his refusal to sign the 2020/2021 Appropriation Bill that allocated Sh27.1 billion out of the Sh37.5 billion budget to Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS), leaving City Hall with only Sh8.4 billion.
Sonko was facing impeachment in March this year but MCAs dropped the motion after President Kenyatta’s intervention.
This followed a meeting at State House where 115 out of the 122 Nairobi Ward Representatives were in attendance.
Nairobi County communications director Elkana Jacob, said the MCAs agreed to drop the motion and focus on service delivery.
