Uhuru Commissions Sh1.9 Billion Likoni Floating Bridge [PHOTOS]

John Wanjohi Dec 10, 2020

President Kenyatta on Thursday commissioned the Likoni Floating Bridge in Liwatoni, Mombasa.

The 1.2-kilometer footbridge is the first of its kind in the East African region and is expected to ease congestion at the Likoni Ferry, which serves 300,000 people and 6,000 vehicles daily.

The bridge links Liwatoni on Mombasa Island with Ras Bofu in Likoni mainland and will officially be opened to the public on January 1st, 2021.

The pedestrians-only structure will free up the ferry crossing to cater for vehicular and cargo traffic across the Likoni Channel.

“We have agreed with the contractor that from the 1st of January, the bridge will be ready for public use to cross to and from the island and enable you get to your jobs and homes with ease instead of relying on the Likoni ferry,” Uhuru said during the commissioning.

The Sh1.9 billion footbridge features a 150-meter long movable part in the central, which will be opened using motors to allow ships to pass.

The project is being undertaken by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and is over 95 percent complete.

It will be operated by the Kenya Airports Authority (KPA) in collaboration with the Kenya Highways Authority (Kenha).
