William Kabogo Speaks on Vying for Nairobi Governor’s Seat

John Wanjohi Dec 23, 2020

Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has dismissed claims that he has declared interest in the Nairobi governor’s seat.

Daily Nation listed Kabogo, former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth, former Starehe MP Margret Wanjiru, and former Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru as some of the candidates eying the seat.

But speaking on Tuesday, Kabogo clarified that he is yet to make such an announcement, saying that his name is being peddled by people who want him to contest for the position.

“It is people's wish that I vie for the seat, but I haven’t said anything about Nairobi,” he said.

Nominated MP Maina Kamanda noted that the handshake team will field a joint candidate in the Nairobi gubernatorial by-election.

“We will field one candidate under the spirit of the handshake and a suitable formula will be crafted to determine who is best to take the job,” he told a local daily.

In a gazette notice dated December 22nd, 2020, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced the mini-election will be held on February 18th, 2021.

The seat fell vacant following the impeachment of Mike Sonko on the grounds of gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, abuse of office, violation of national laws, and lack of mental capacity to run the county government.
