Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu Cleared to Join Race for Nairobi Governor

The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) on Monday cleared former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu to run for Nairobi governor’s seat.

Waititu received the green light to contest in the February 18th, 2021 Nairobi gubernatorial by-election as an independent candidate.

This came after ORPP official John Macharia certified that his floodlight symbol does not belong to any registered political party. It was also confirmed that Waititu is not a registered member of any political outfit.

“According to the records held by this office, Ferdinand Ndungu Waititu, ID No. 4307917 is not a member of a fully registered political party as at December 28, 2020,” said Macharia.

It remains unclear whether the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will clear Waititu to contest for the position due to his pending corruption case in court.

Waititu was impeached as the Governor for Kiambu in January this year on charges of gross violation of the constitution, abuse of office, and crimes under the national law.

The Nairobi governor’s position fell vacant following the impeachment of Mike Sonko earlier this month.

Sonko was removed from office on the grounds of gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, abuse of office, violation of national laws, and lacking the mental capacity to run the county government.
