Party Linked to DP William Ruto Adopts New Name, Changes Symbol to Wheelbarrow

A political party linked to Deputy President William Ruto has changed its name, symbol, and slogan ahead of the 2022 general election.

The Party for Development and Reforms (PDR) was renamed United Democratic Alliance (UDA) while its symbol was changed from a bull to a wheelbarrow.

The planned changes were communicated by the Registrar of Political Parties through a gazette notice No. 11254 dated December 28th, 2020.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 20 (i) of the Political Parties Act, the Registrar of Political Parties gives notice that the Party for Reforms and Development (PDR) intends to effect changes on their particulars,” reads the gazette notice in part.

The Registrar of Political Parties issued a 14-day notice for those objecting to the party’s approval to present their submissions.

UDA’s party symbol is a wheelbarrow which has been the face of DP Ruto’s hustler nation empowerment programme.

Sources within Ruto’s camp said the party whose slogan is ‘Kazi ni Kazi’ could be the political vehicle for his 2022 presidential bid. The party’s colors are yellow and green, with a black-painted wheelbarrow.

Blogger Dennis Itumbi, who heads DP Ruto’s online strategy team, was the first to share UDA’s social media handles. This was followed by several political allies of Ruto sharing the party’s logo on their social media pages.

It is alleged that former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama, who recently declared his support for DP Ruto’s 2022 State House bid, is the party chairman.

In an interview earlier this year, DP Ruto indicated he would exit Jubilee if the wrangles within the governing party persisted.
