A police officer in Kirinyaga County on Sunday shot and killed his colleague before turning the gun on himself in a suspected case of a love triangle gone sour.

Constable Kering Kipkosgei was allegedly taking supper at the house of his girlfriend Sergeant Esther Muthoni Mwangi at Mwea GK Prison staff quarters, according to a report filed at Wang’uru police station.

Corporal Boniface Mithamo, who is Muthoni’s former husband, suddenly stormed in demanding to know what Kering was doing in the house.

He then started attacking Kering and removed his shirt in the process but Muthoni intervened and separated them, escorting Mithamo outside the house.

Angered by Mithamo’s behavior, Kering rushed to the kitchen to fetch his firearm, a Ceska pistol and shot Mithamo on the right side of the neck with the bullet exiting on the left side of the head. Upon realizing he had killed him, Kering ran outside and shot himself in the head.

The two were rushed to Karira Mission Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

Their bodies were moved to the facility’s mortuary pending post-mortem examination as investigations into the incident continue.
