Mike Sonko Charged with Robbery with Violence and Assault
Former Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko was on Tuesday arraigned in a Kiambu court, where he denied several charges leveled against him.
Appearing before Kiambu senior principal magistrate Stella Ataambo, Sonko was charged with 12 counts of robbery with violence, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and forcible entry of a property.
The charges are in relation to an alleged forced entry into a property located in Nairobi’s Buruburu Phase 4 estate on May 25th, 2019.
The court heard that Sonko, together with others not before the court, assaulted Alex Kioko, Musyoki Kavunda, John Mungai, Charles Karori, Evans Obaga, Paul Kahiga, George Chege, Paul Macharia, and Joel Kinja at the same property. The victims were left with bodily injuries.
Sonko allegedly stormed the said property in the company of a group of youth, whom under his utterances caused the commission of the offenses.
The prosecution is seeking court orders to detain Sonko to allow the conclusion of investigations, take him to a Mombasa court where he has a warrant of arrest for a pending case, and prevent him from accessing and intimidating witnesses.
He will remain in police custody pending the ruling on his bail application on Thursday.
Sonko spent Monday night at Gigiri Police Station cells after being grilled by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
