Former Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko has reportedly been moved to Kamiti Maximum Security Prison for detention.

Reports indicate that Sonko, who was being held at Gigiri police station, was whisked away to the facility on Wednesday evening.

His lawyers, Assa Nyakundi and John Khaminwa, said they were headed to Kamiti to meet their client. Nyakundi told The Star that he was informed that Sonko is set to face terrorism-related charges.

“There is a huge traffic jam but I am told he is already at Kamiti waiting for possible arraignment. We are informed police have sworn an affidavit seeking to hold him for 30 days over terrorism-related charges,” said Nyakundi.

Sonko had earlier in the day appeared at Milimani law courts for a case in which he is charged with conspiracy to defraud the Nairobi county government of Sh14 million.

A Kiambu court on Wednesday ordered Sonko be detained at Gigiri police station pending the ruling on his bail application on Thursday.

He was charged with 12 counts of robbery with violence, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and destruction of property.

The charges are in relation to an alleged forced entry into a property located in Nairobi’s Buruburu Phase 4 estate on May 25th, 2019.
