Former Powerful Moi-Era Politician Hosea Kiplagat Dies in Nairobi

Former powerful politician Hosea Kiplagat has passed away aged 76.

Kiplagat died at his home in Karen, Nairobi on Saturday morning as his family prepared to rush him to the hospital after falling ill.

He is reported to have been seen last on Friday evening having drinks with friends at a Lavington members’ club.

Kiplagat, a close associate, and aide to the later former President Daniel Arap Moi was a long-serving chairperson of Co-operative Bank until his resignation in 2003. Hosea was a well-known businessman.

He unsuccessfully contested for the Baringo Central parliamentary seat in 2007 under the Safina party and 2013 on an ODM ticket.

Last month, a court allowed the Bank of India to auction some property owned by Kiplagat to recover a loan of Sh375 million advanced to his company three years ago.

The court dismissed the former Kanu operative’s bid to stop auctioneers from selling his parcels of land in Eldoret town, saying he failed to demonstrate how the lender violated his rights by seeking to sell the property to recover the debt.
