John Wanjohi Feb 09, 2021

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been released on bond after spending eight nights in police cells.

On Tuesday, Kiambu Senior Principal Magistrate Stella Ataambo freed Sonko on a bond of Sh300,000 with a surety of a similar amount.

The ruling was in relation to a case in which the politician is charged with several counts of robbery with violence, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and destruction of property. He denied all the charges.

The court heard that on diverse dates in May 2019, Sonko forcibly entered private property in Nairobi’s Buruburu estate together with others not before the court.

During the incident, Musyoki Kavunda, John Mungai, Charles Karori, Evans Obaga, Paul Kahiga, George Chege, and Paul Macharia were assaulted, leaving them with bodily injuries.

Sonko, who was impeached as the Governor for Nairobi in December last year, also faced an additional count of forcibly entering private property without a search warrant.

On Tuesday morning, Sonko was rushed to Nairobi Hospital from Gigiri police station after complaining of stomach pains.
