Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi Tests Positive for COVID-19 After Receiving Vaccine

Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has gone into self-isolation after testing positive for COVID-19.

Meru County Health Executive Misheck Mutuma on Friday dismissed rumors that Murungi is hospitalized, saying he isolating at his home in Nairobi.

“He has been advised to self-isolate. He is okay and doing very well. He will be back [to work] after a few days," said Mutuma.

His diagnosis comes barely two weeks after he received the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine on March 8th at Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Kiraitu was the first person to be inoculated against the virus in Meru county, noting that he was leading by example.

Kenya is currently experiencing the third wave of COVID-19 characterized by increased infections and fatalities.

On Friday, the Health Ministry recorded 1,354 new COVID-19 infections and 28 deaths, the highest-ever number of fatalities in the country in a single day. The death toll now stands at 1,982 while the total caseload is 118,889.
