Homicide Detectives Probing Possible Assassination in Journalist Betty Barasa's Shooting

John Wanjohi Apr 10, 2021

Homicide detectives are pursuing a possible assassination in the shooting of Kenyan journalist Betty Barasa.

Sleuths believe her murder was a well-organized assassination as the gunmen only targeted her in a house that had six other people, among them her husband, her three children, house help, and a friend.

Betty, who was a senior video editor at Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), was shot dead by gunmen at her home in Ololua area, Ngong’ on Wednesday night.

She was waylaid by three gunmen armed with AK47 rifles at her gate as she returned home from work at around 8:20 pm, driving a Toyota Prado.

The criminals then led her into the newly-built house where they held her family hostage and demanded money and other valuables.

Two armed thugs frog marched Betty to her upstairs bedroom and left their accomplice keeping an eye on the other family members in the sitting room.

Shortly after, the family heard a gunshot coming from upstairs before the gunmen came back downstairs, picked Betty’s laptop and phone, and left the compound. Betty’s lifeless body was found lying on the ground in a pool of blood.

A postmortem examination conducted on her body revealed that she died of a single gunshot to the face, which lodged inside her head.  The spent cartilage recovered from the scene will be subjected to forensic analysis.

Investigations are ongoing but no arrests have been made so far.
