Three Suspects Arrested for Cultivating Bhang Worth Sh15 Million

John Wanjohi Apr 23, 2021

Police in Nakuru are holding three suspects for allegedly cultivating bhang on a quarter-acre plot.

Victor Kung’u Wainaina, his son Broddus Wainaina, and Dennis Matete were nabbed by a multi-agency security team on Friday in Nakuru’s London estate.

The officers discovered, uprooted, and destroyed matured cannabis sativa plants that were ready for harvest. The destroyed plants weighing 500kgs had a street value of about Sh15 million.

“A multi-agency security team led by Nakuru Anti-Narcotics sleuths, stormed into the compound and destroyed what would have been a bumper harvest for the owners,” a police report reads.

Kung’u attempted to stop the operation by lying to police officers that he is a member of a Nakuru-based Community Based Organization (CBO) that is licensed to cultivate the plant. He also produced a letter purportedly drafted by the said CBO, allowing him to grow the plant.

“How comes nyinyi hamjui, halafu mbona hakuna consultation? Hii ndio inanionyesha kuwa hii ni malicious, unajua mnaharibu mali ya CBO, it is quite unfair, we have planted fruits with them,” he said.

The three were taken into police custody pending arraignment in court next week.
