Slain Kiiru Boys Principal's Daughter Begs Court to Free Mother, Who was Convicted of Murder

John Wanjohi May 19, 2021

June Mbuthi, daughter of slain Kiiru Boys High School Principal Solomon Mwangi Mbuthi has pleaded with the court to release her mother Jane Muthoni, who was convicted of murder.

Speaking during a virtual court session on Tuesday, June appealed to Justice Joel Ngugi to consider setting her mother free ahead of her sentencing on June 3rd.

June told the court that since the arrest and incarceration of her mother five years ago, she and her siblings have suffered as no one has been taking care of them, saying that they need at least one parent.

“We all want justice for my father. He was my best friend but the absence of my parents has been so hard for my siblings and I for the past 5 years. We request the court to have mercy on my mum. I know it can’t be undone but we don’t have anyone we can fully rely on. All that time, we have been depending on third parties like relatives and friends,” she said.

Muthoni and her co-accused Isaac Ng'ang'a were last month found guilty of Mwangi’s murder.

Mwangi went missing on November 6th, 2016, and his lifeless and mutilated body was found dumped at Karakuta Coffee Estate in Juja, Kiambu county on November 14th, 2016.

Muthoni, the former principal of Icaciri Secondary School in Kiambu, was accused of hiring assassins to kill her husband but she defended herself, saying that it was one of Mwangi’s associates who eliminated him following a failed school transfer deal.

She alleged that a cartel that facilitated transfers and promotions of teachers in the region was unhappy after Muthoni was promoted to the position of headteacher at Icaciri Secondary while her husband was transferred to Kiiru Boys without their “influence.”

Muthoni added that the cartel demanded Sh1 million from her husband and went ahead to kill him after he refused to comply, and framed her for the murder.

But the prosecution submitted that Muthoni hired four men to execute Mwangi on suspicion of having an extra-marital affair.

Key suspect Joseph Kariuki was handed a seven-year jail sentence after confessing to playing part in the murder alongside Nelson Njiru, who is still at large.
