Ruto Speaks Out After UDA Kiambaa By-Election Victory

Deputy President William Ruto has spoken out following Thursday’s by-elections in Kiambaa Constituency and Muguga Ward.

Speaking during a burial in Mathioya, Murang'a County on Friday, Ruto praised residents of the two areas for maintaining peace during the hotly contested by-elections.

He termed the showdown between the Jubilee party and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) as a friendly match, adding that Muguga and Kiambaa electorates achieved what the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) was advocating for.
 
"The people of Kiambaa and Muguga have shown us that it is possible to vote peacefully and go back to work without changing the constitution. It is the loser to accept the defeat and that is the end of an election process," Ruto stated.

Ruto noted that the two by-elections should act as a lesson to those who have been engaging in violence after elections. "We don't need to change the Constitution to have a peaceful election," he said.

UDA’s candidate John Njuguna Wanjiku emerged victorious in the Kiambaa parliamentary by-election, defeating his Jubilee Party rival Kariri Njama by a slim margin of 510 votes. Wanjiku garnered 21,773 votes while Kariri managed 21,263.

In the Muguga ward by-election, Jubilee party’s candidate Mung’ara Joseph Githinji garnered 4,089 votes ahead of Peter Thumbi of UDA who got 4,062 votes.
