MPs Allied to Deputy President William Ruto Allege Plot to Rig 2022 Elections

MPs allied to Deputy President William Ruto claim there is a plot to manipulate the 2022 general elections.

Addressing journalists at Parliament buildings on Friday, the leaders alleged that there is a deliberate plan by a section of State officers to manage the outcome of next year’s elections.

"We have information that there is a high-level conspiracy in government that will culminate into great threats to the safety and well-being of the people of Kenya and the peace and stability of the Republic of Kenya," the MPs said in a joint statement.

They accused Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho of instructing Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to develop a plan for the armament of chiefs and assistant chiefs ahead of next year’s elections.

"PS Karanja Kibicho wrote to the IG of Police through his Deputy Moffat Kanji calling for the establishment of a sub-committee for developing a criteria to guide government measures to arm chiefs and sub-chiefs in the country," they added.

Led by Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika, they claimed that Kibicho asked Mutyambai to provide a framework for the creation of a police unit for administrators under the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO). This, they said, will boost the State’s ability to influence the outcome of the election by creating violence and chaos in various parts.

" By fermenting conflict, fear and despondency, the Ministry of Interior will be able to suppress voter turnout and enable electoral malpractices and violence as was witnessed during the 2007 General elections.”

"We call upon His Excellency the President, as Commander-In-Chief, to take decisive action in this matter and reassure all Kenyans of his commitment to the constitution, the rule of law, good governance, peace, security, and safety," the MPs added.
