Nairobi Hawker Whose Teeth Were Plucked Out by City Kanjos Paid Sh427,000
Anthoney Maina, the hawker who was brutally attacked by Nairobi City County askaris last month has been paid Sh427,000 in damages.
This comes after the three askaris agreed to compensate the socks hawker for plucking out his teeth after he failed to give them a bribe of Sh100 on July 2nd. The law enforcement officers, popularly known as Kanjos, settled for an out-of-court agreement in a bid to save their jobs and avoid prosecution over the matter.
“Humprey Muswangi, Hassan Chege, and Dennis Macharia are the respondents in this matter of assault having accepted their personal liability jointly and severally over their assault on Anthoney Maina and have offered to settle this matter out of court” the agreement signed before Anthony’s lawyer Harrison Musyoka states.
Muswangi, Chege, and Macharia agreed to jointly compensate the claimant Sh300,000 for loss of five teeth at 60,000 each, Sh56,000 for broken jaw connection, Sh4,000 for transportation, Sh37,800 for food, Sh15,000 for rent, and clinic visits for 14,000; all totaling Sh427,200.
The amount was wired to Maina’s mobile number on August 3rd, 2021.
Maina, who hawks socks in Nairobi CBD, was going about his business along Tom Mboya street when the three askaris approached him and demanded a routine bribe of Sh100. Unfortunately, the 25-year-old only had Sh20 in his pocket which the officers declined saying it was too little.
They then handcuffed the victim and beat him using a metal rode before fleeing in their county van. Maina was admitted to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for treatment.
