KFCB CEO Ezekiel Mutua Sent Packing After 6-Year Reign

John Wanjohi Aug 06, 2021

Dr. Ezekiel Mutua has been relieved of his duties as the CEO of the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB).

Mutua, who has been at the helm of the State Corporation for the past six years, was reportedly sent on “terminal leave” and no reason has been given.

Christopher Wambua from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has been appointed as KFCB CEO in an acting capacity.

The development comes after Mutua, through Twitter on Thursday night, dismissed reports that he had been fired by ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru over alleged abuse of office.

“My attention has been drawn to reports on social media to the effect that I have been fired as CEO of KFCB. PLEASE IGNORE such malicious rumours. I am not aware of such developments and there can be no grain of truth in them as there’s no vacancy in the office of the CEO KFCB,” Mutua said on his official Twitter account.

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr accused CS Mucheru of illegally removing Mutua from his position.

“Ezekiel Mutua unlawfully removed by CS Mucheru as CEO after being lawfully appointed by the Board. Laws are mere suggestions for this administration,” Kilonzo tweeted.

Reports indicate Mutua’s ouster is linked to an ongoing investigation regarding claims of irregular payments made to him by KFCB during his tenure.

In a letter dated May 6th, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) asked KFCB Chairman to provide documents and information to aid with the investigation against Mutua and another board member, Gathoni Kungu.

Some of the documents sought by EACC included personal files of the two officers, payslips, payment vouchers, and HR policy on salary increment among others.
