Francis Atwoli Elected Chairperson of Australia-Based Workers’ Awareness Fund
Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) secretary-general Francis Atwoli has been elected the chairperson of the Global Workers Awareness Fund based in Sydney, Australia.
Atwoli will serve in the position for a term of three years and is expected to fly to Australia for his acceptance speech.
COTU deputy secretary-general Benson Okwaro in a statement said Atwoli was voted by delegates during Friday’s elections.
The delegates cited Atwoli’s dedication and years of selfless service as the key attributes towards the chairing and management of the funds.
They said Atwoli was the favorite candidate for the position since he is the longest-serving member of the International Labor Organization (ILO), which coordinates Africa and Asia workers.
The sole role of the Global Workers Awareness Fund is to create awareness on social, economic, and political issues.
In June, Atwoli was re-elected for the fourth time as a member of the International Labor Organization (ILO) governing body in Geneva, Switzerland. He was among the candidates that received the highest number of votes globally.
The ILO is a United Nations agency devoted to promoting social justice and internationally recognized human and labor rights.
