Resign If You Are Unhappy, Uhuru Dares Deputy President William Ruto
President Uhuru Kenyatta has challenged Deputy President William Ruto to resign if he is unhappy with how the government is being run.
Kenyatta, who spoke during an engagement with media editors at State House on Monday, said Ruto should quit instead of criticizing the government and at the same time taking credit for its achievements.
“The honorable thing is that if you are not happy is you step aside and allow those who want to move on, to move on. So that you can also take your agenda to the people. This is what happens in any normal democracy. You can’t have your cake and eat it,” Kenyatta stated.
Uhuru also spoke about his strained relationship with Ruto, saying he has no idea what transpired between them.
"I have no idea what has transpired except for the fact he is trying to create a base for him and his future politics, which is his right, I have never denied him that and he is free to do so. But I feel it’s unfortunate the manner in which he is doing it by going against the same government he is serving is wrong. Like I said the issues we have been trying to fight in this BBI, are the same issues that brought us together," he added.
Kenyatta also clarified that his recent meetings with party leaders Raila Odinga (ODM), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Musalia Musavadi (ANC), Gideon Moi (Kanu), and Moses Wetang’ula (Ford-Kenya) had nothing to do with 2022 succession politics.
He added that Ruto was not included in the meetings because he was opposed to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and his attempt to bring leaders and the country together.
"He (Ruto) has been opposed to the process, meetings are not about selecting a candidate. You cannot bring someone who is opposed & does not want to see things happen on board. You cannot force something down someone’s throat,” said Kenyatta.
