Ruto: BBI was the Most Dangerous Project in Kenya's History

John Wanjohi Aug 24, 2021

Deputy President William Ruto says the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) was the most dangerous project in Kenya’s history.

Ruto, who spoke on Tuesday at his Karen residence, said the BBI Constitutional Amendment Bill would have reserved the democratic gains since independence.

He argued that the BBI, a brainchild of President Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga, sought to install an imperial president who would control all arms of the government.

“It was going to install an imperial president who would control the Judiciary, the Executive, and the Legislature. It was simply dangerous. We thank God BBI failed. Let us not lie to ourselves and the people,” Ruto stated

Ruto spoke a day after President Kenyatta faulted the courts for declaring the Constitutional (Amendment) Bill 2020 null and void, saying the judges were misguided in their ruling.

“I’m more than happy to serve out my time and finish my program. I believe this is also part of my agenda to be able to bring people together and ensure we have a peaceful, stable country,” said Uhuru.

“Unfortunately, the courts have ruled the way they have ruled and I believe they have been highly misguided in that process. Unfortunately, we have had politicians, for short-term political gain, who have deviated from why we had BBI to it being an issue of competition,” he added.
