Martha Karua Rules Out the Possibility of Being Raila's Running Mate in 2022

John Wanjohi Oct 23, 2021

Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua has ruled out the possibility of being ODM leader Raila Odinga’s running mate in the 2022 elections.

Karua, who spoke during a leaders' meeting at Kerugoya Starwood Hotel on Saturday, insisted she will be contesting for the Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat, which is currently held by Anne Waiguru.

"I have not declared to be someone's running mate nor have I been approached by anybody. I will be running for the Kirinyaga governor’s seat in the next polls," Karua remarked.

At the same time, Karua stated that the people of Mt Kenya will only support a presidential candidate who will address the region’s challenges, including insecurity and poor coffee and tea prices.

She also warned leaders from the region against folding their political parties ahead of next year’s general elections, noting that such a move would be suicidal as it would be difficult to bargain during power-sharing.

Karua cited Deputy President William Ruto, who she said is regretting after dissolving his URP party in the run-up to the 2017 elections.

“At the moment there are a lot of political fights between the President and his deputy, the deputy president has no power over the control of Jubilee," Karua noted.
