IEBC Warns Aspirants Against Early Campaigns Ahead of 2022 Elections

John Wanjohi Nov 21, 2021

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has warned aspirants against engaging in early campaigns ahead of next year’s elections.

The commission says some political parties and candidates are acting outside the law by participating in early campaigns.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati urged aspirants and parties to adhere to laid-out guidelines on stipulated timelines, warning that the commission will not hesitate to enforce the law.

“The commission has noted with concern sustained campaigns by some political parties and aspirants outside the legally prescribed period. We urge all political parties and aspirants to refrain from engaging in early campaigns prior to the General Election," Chebukati said in a statement.

IEBC pointed out that early political campaigns “are undesirable and may upset the political environment” as the country prepares for the 2022 general election.

“The commission requests all stakeholders in the electoral process to maintain a peaceful political environment conducive for secure and credible elections,” IEBC stated.

The commission further reiterated its commitment to deliver a free, fair, and impartial election that meets the democratic aspirations of the people of Kenya.
