Inspector-General of Police’s Son in Trouble After Hitting and Killing Two Motorcyclists in Nairobi

John Wanjohi Dec 04, 2021

Police are investigating an incident in which the son of Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai killed two motorcycle riders on the Southern Bypass in Nairobi.

David Mwendwa, who was allegedly driving while intoxicated, is said to have run over a pedestrian before colliding with two motorcycles.

The two motorbike riders died on the spot while the pedestrian survived and is currently admitted to a hospital in critical condition.

It is alleged that Mwendwa fled the scene in the company of two women who were aboard his Toyota Hilux at the time of the Thursday night incident. Mwendwa reportedly presented himself at Lang’ata Police Station a day after the accident.

The absence of the vehicle’s wreckage or a police report on the accident at Lang’ata Police Station triggered claims of a cover-up but Nairobi County Traffic Commandant Joshua Omukata has refuted these allegations.

“Even if he is the son of the IG (inspector-general), the thing ahead of us is an accident. We are not investigating the son of the IG we are investigating the accident. It is not about other personalities,” Omukata said.

Omukata says the suspect will undergo a medical examination to determine whether he was drunk at the time of the accident.

“At this point, investigations about the accident are at an advanced stage and in due course, our file will complete once we obtain crucial evidence regarding the accident before we submit the file to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice,” the National Police Service said in a statement.

Mwendwa could face charges of causing death by dangerous driving.
