Kenyan Woman Imprisoned for Life for Trafficking Heroin Worth Sh7.3 Million
A Mombasa court on Wednesday sentenced a 40-year-old Kenyan woman to life in prison after she was found guilty of drug trafficking.
Fatuma Sicobo Mohamed was convicted of trafficking 2.5kgs of heroin worth Sh7.3 million in Mombasa.
Shanzu Senior Resident Magistrate David Odhiambo further slapped Ms. Fatuma with a fine of Sh22.1 million, which is three times the value of the drugs.
The magistrate while reading the sentence indicated that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt the offense of drug trafficking contrary to the law.
“In the circumstances, the accused should pay a fine of Sh22.1 million, which is thrice the value of drugs recovered from her, and in addition serve life imprisonment,” ruled the magistrate.
The court also directed that the drugs seized from the convict remain under the care of the investigations officer and be destroyed no later than January 30th, 2022.
Fatuma’s co-accused Masuo Bakari Tajiri was acquitted of drug trafficking charges due to lack of evidence.
“I find that the prosecution has failed to prove its case against Mr. Bakari for the offense of trafficking in narcotics by storing contrary to the law, and as such he is hereby acquitted,” the magistrate stated.
The magistrate ordered that money and other items seized from Bakari be returned to him or his family members.
