Former Kenyan Presidential Aspirant Quizzed by UK Police over Terror Links

John Wanjohi Jan 30, 2022

Police in the UK have reportedly questioned former Kenyan presidential aspirant Jaffer Isaak Sora over allegations of terror financing.

Sora, who unsuccessfully contested for the presidency in 2013, says he received a call from Metropolitan Police to shed light on alleged claims of financing the activities of Somalia-based terror group Al-Shabaab.

"On January 26th, 2022, at about 10 am UK time, I received a phone call from metropolitan police. They requested an appointment with them at my home to clear something with me. I agreed to meet them at the home by 2 pm. Then, two plain-clothed officers from counter-terror police came,” Sora says in a statement.

"As absurd as it may sound, the two police officers informed me that they have received information from Kenya that I was selling marijuana and using the money to fund Al-Shabaab terror group based in Somalia," he added.

Sora denied the allegations and has invited UK police to conduct thorough investigations against him and his family.

"I trust and respect UK’s institutions. They are free to investigate me not only for that one fake allegation but actually investigate me for almost the two decades I resided in the UK. I have nothing to hide as I am an honest and hard-working person,” Sora noted.

He added: "This great nation (UK) gave me an opportunity to feed my family and others by extension. Above all granted me an opportunity to further my education and as we speak I am in the final semester of my M.Sc. Global Politics, Governance and Security.”

In 2019, the former military officer was arrested in Marsabit for allegedly being in possession of 445 kilograms of bhang worth approximately Sh13.3 million. He was arrested alongside his driver at a roadblock on the Marsabit-Moyale highway while transporting the drug substance.
