Miguna Miguna Visits Kenya Consulate in Toronto in Ongoing Diaspora Voter Registration

Kenyan-Canadian attorney Miguna Miguna on Thursday visited the Kenya Honorary Consulate in Toronto in the ongoing diaspora voter registration exercise.

Through Twitter on Friday, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) said Miguna was among Kenyans in Canada who have visited Kenyan Embassies, High Commissions, and Consulates to register as a voter, change particulars or transfer their voting station from Kenya to Canada.

The commission shared photos of Miguna, who was deported to Canada in 2018, at the Kenya Consulate in Toronto.
 
"Miguna Miguna was among the many Kenyans living in Canada, who visited Kenya High Commission office and Consulates to register as a voter, change particulars or transfer their voting station from Kenya to Canada," IEBC tweeted.

IEBC commenced diaspora voter listing in Canada on February 1st following the easing of Covid-19 restriction in the North American nation.

The exercise is being done at the Kenya High Commission in Ottawa, Kenya Honorary Consulate in Toronto, and Kenya Honorary Consulate in Vancouver.

The registration of Kenyans in the diaspora as voters is going on in 10 other countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, South Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and South Africa.

On Monday, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said more than 1,000 new voters have been registered in the diaspora since January 21st.

At least 4,000 Kenyans in five countries voted in the 2017 general election, with incumbent president Kenyatta garnering 1,504 votes ahead of his main rival Raila Odinga, who garnered 1,321 votes.

Odinga was victorious in Tanzania and Burundi where he garnered 394 and 48 votes respectively ahead of Kenyatta who got 393 and 47 respectively. Kenyatta won in Uganda, South Africa, and Rwanda.
