Uhuru Accuses Ruto of Lying and Dishing Out ‘Looted Funds’ to Church Leaders
President Kenyatta on Wednesday took a dig at Deputy President William Ruto, accusing him of playing politics of deceit and division.
Speaking during a meeting with Mt. Kenya leaders and delegates at Sagana State Lodge, the president castigated Ruto for telling lies about his March 2018 handshake with ODM leader Raila Odinga, saying the deputy president was aware of the whole process.
“When I was discussing with Raila, I kept my deputy well informed. Even on the morning of the handshake, he was the last person I talked to before I went to Harambee House. Then he comes here to tell you that I kept him in the dark,” said Uhuru.
Kenyatta maintained that the handshake was meant to restore peace in the country in the wake of the acrimonious 2017 presidential election.
“God willing, I want to finish my term, I leave the country to people who mean well for the country and we will be meeting in the streets,” he added.
At the same time, Uhuru criticized a section of religious leaders from the Mt Kenya region for accepting looted public funds in order to mislead the public.
“Some of the church leaders have been compromised by huge donations donated by corrupt leaders, I want to say that you should know that it is wrong to lie through the bible and you are heading to Jahannam. The money you are receiving is the same money that was to build dams in Elgeyo Marakwet so that God’s children can get water,” Kenyatta said in an apparent reference to Ruto’s church donations.
“How, as religious leaders, can you receive money stolen from Sh3 billion meant for construction of dams in Elgeyo Marakwet to mislead our people just because you have received Sh2 million. You'd rather receive Sh100 that I have genuinely earned than Sh1 million that has been stolen,” he added.
