US Gov't Assures Kenya of Support for Democracy and Election Integrity During Ruto's Tour
The US government has assured Kenya of its support in preserving democracy and advocating for a free and fair election in August 2022.
The US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Molly Phee made the assurance during a meeting with Deputy President William Ruto and his entourage at the State Department in Washington, DC on Wednesday.
During the meeting, Ruto committed to a peaceful election and assured the US of a steady and robust partner in the bilateral relations between the two countries, according to a statement released by Ruto's campaign secretariat.
Ruto, who is contesting for the presidency in the August 9th elections, further urged the US to continue their long-standing support for Kenya's democratization and the holding of free, fair, and credible elections. He also underscored Kenya's role as an anchor state for peace and stability in the East and Horn of Africa region.
The deputy president was accompanied by ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, Garissa Township MP Aden Duale, and former Foreign Affairs CAS Ababu Namwamba.
The delegation thanked the US government for its continued support for the health sector, particularly in the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and cholera. They also welcomed the US’ planned investment in vaccine production in Nairobi.
Ruto is expected to visit the White House on Thursday for a meeting at the National Security Council, his presidential campaign secretariat said.
