Kenyatta National Hospital Othaya Annex Renamed Mwai Kibaki Hospital
The Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) Othaya Annex has been renamed Mwai Kibaki Hospital in honor of the late former president, who died last week.
The hospital’s director Peter Munene said the decision to name the facility after Kenya’s third president was made following consultations between Kibaki’s family and government officials.
“We didn’t just wake up and rename this facility. We alive to the fact that Kibaki never wanted anything named after him, but his family has given the go-ahead,” Munene stated.
The construction of the Level VI hospital began during Kibaki’s regime and was completed by President Kenyatta’s administration.
The facility has been serving residents of the larger Mount Kenya region seeking specialized treatment.
Following Kibaki’s death on Friday, politicians led by Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula and his nominated counterpart Beth Mugo called on the government to name a number of key infrastructure projects after the former president.
“There are many places that should be named after him. I think we should present a motion before the house to do so,” Wetang’ula told the Senate on Monday.
It is well documented that Kibaki was against the naming of a number of key state projects that he commissioned after himself.
