John Wanjohi May 15, 2022

Deputy President William Ruto has named Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate in the August 9th presidential election.

While making the announcement at his Karen residence on Sunday, Ruto said Gachagua trounced other candidates who were being considered for the position including Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki, and MPs Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu) and Alice Wahome (Kandara).

Ruto, who is eyeing the presidency under the UDA party and Kenya Kwanza alliance, described Gachagua as an astute debater and a successful elected politician who is a principled, resilient and fearless fighter for the right cause.

"Gachagua is my friend whom  I have worked with, especially on that Bottom-Up Economic model and we started that journey together. He understands people's issues, he is passionate about ordinary people," Ruto said.

In his acceptance speech, Gachagua thanked Ruto for showing trust and confidence in him, promising not to let him, the hustler nation, and Kenyans down.

“This is the biggest day in my life and I truly thank you our Deputy President for the trust and confidence you have bestowed in me. With the team, you have assembled, I believe we have what it takes to realise the dreams of the hustler nation and it will be a great honour for me to play my part,” he said.

Gachagua, who holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science & literature from the University of Nairobi, previously served as an Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, District Officer cadet and Personal Assistant to the head of Public Service.

The 57-year-old first-time MP also worked as a District Officer in Kakamega and Laikipia Districts as well as Personal Assistant of President Kenyatta when he served as the Minister for Local Government.
