It is Impossible for Gov't to Hack IEBC Servers, ICT CS Mucheru Says

John Wanjohi Jun 11, 2022

ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru has distanced himself and the government from an alleged plot to rig the August 9th general elections.

Mucheru says it is impossible to hack the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) servers to manipulate the outcome of the election in favor of one presidential candidate.

He pointed out that as an independent body, IEBC has procured its own Information Technology (IT) systems and that the ICT ministry was not involved in any way in this process.

“We do not have any plans or intention to hack the IEBC servers neither do we have the know-how to do it because the servers are procured and secured by the IEBC itself,” Mucheru said.

Mucheru, who spoke when he closed the Cyber Security Strategy 2022–2026 Workshop in Naivasha on Friday, termed the vote-rigging claims by Deputy President William Ruto’s camp as pure political rhetoric, insisting that it is possible to hack the system secured by IEBC itself without prior knowledge or information about its security.

At the same time, Mucheru announced that IEBC had procured 1,500 satellite modems to be used in areas not covered by the 3G network for the ease of transmission of the results in the forthcoming elections.
