American TV Presenter on the Spot for Claiming Pregnant Kenyan Women Do Not Have Voting Rights
American TV presenter Emily Rose Compagno has angered Kenyans on Twitter (KOT) after claiming that pregnant women in Kenya do not have voting rights.
Compagno made the comment while giving her views about women’s voting rights on the “Outnumbered” show on FOX News TV which she co-hosts.
She noted that celebrities in the US should stop complaining about Americans having limited voting rights, arguing that it is worse in countries like Kenya where she claimed that expectant mothers are not allowed to get out of their houses.
“The insularity of these celebrities is so asinine … it’s so nauseating because these comments are totally delusional, that we have less voting rights here,” Compagno remarked.
She continued: “What about in Kenya, where pregnant women can’t leave the house so they absolutely have no constructive right to vote, or in Oman, where women have to vote as their husbands do or risk death.”
Her comments rubbed up Kenyans online the wrong way, and are now demanding that she withdraws and apologizes to Kenyans for her false statement.
@ElijahRottok tweeted: “Dear @FoxNews I am appalled at the insinuation by this panelist on your show that pregnant women in Kenya don't have voting rights. This is not true and unfortunate.”
@paulinenjoroge wrote: “😳 @FoxNews!
What is this? What is @EmilyCompagno saying? That in Kenya pregnant women can’t leave the house so they have no right to vote? What does she imagine our country is like? That statement is incorrect, misleading, condescending, and should be withdrawn.”
@EstherPassaris said: “@EmilyCompagno Pregnant women in Kenya are allowed to leave the house. Pregnant women in Kenya can vote. Pregnant women get priority on voting lines. Pregnant women do give birth free of charge under the government #lindamama program. Retract your statement.”
@KenMureithi quipped: “@FoxNews selling fake News about Kenya. The level of ignorance in the US is worse than I thought it was.”
